Bringing consulting firms up to speed

Bringing consulting firms up to speedBringing consulting firms up to speedAs virtually anyone will tell you, being successful in business today is all about networking. And theyll also tell you that with social media dominating the airwaves, its all about managing that network online. This piece from Consulting magazine addresses that very issue. Companies, especially consulting firms that are so inherently tied to the value of their relationships, must take the step of monitoring those relationships electronically. The author, Geoffrey Hyatt (full disclosure hes a VP at an ERM company) directly refers to enterprise relationship management (ERM) and customer relationship management (CRM) systems as ways of tracking all relevant client contacts and relationships- basically LinkedIn for companies. Hyatt also mentions that, despite knowing whats good for them in terms of maximizing their networks, most consulting firms do elend have a comprehensive automated way of tracking their contac ts. Theres something both inefficient, but also a bit homely in doing things the old-fashioned way- especially when it comes to managing person-to-person interactions (those who are brought up on Facebook will have no concept of that behavior once they get to the business world). But consulting firms need to get real Were getting to the point in our rapidly evolving, scarily cyber world where if they dont take advantage of these tools, theyll be quickly left in the dust, clinging to their Rolodexes for dear life. And thats just contact management systems- Step 1, people. We havent even gotten to the transformative power of blogs, Twitter, etc., and the ways they can change your business. As this video will tell you, its time to hop on the bandwagon

Staffing Services and Recruitment Strategies to Get Clients to Yes

Staffing Services and Recruitment Strategies to Get Clients to YesStaffing Services and Recruitment Strategies to Get Clients to YesStaffing Services and Recruitment Strategies to Get Clients to Yes MuzioAs the end of the year approaches, you probably have a few clients whose recruitment strategies seem, for want of a better word, stuck. Maybe you have a client who seems ready to commit to your firm but never does. Or, maybe youre struggling with a manager who sounds like shes ready to commit to a candidate but always needs another week to decide. In order to get ansicht clients recruitment strategies to yes by year-end, you may need to try something new.Luckily, motivation theories can help. When youre trying to get a client or candidate to yes, what youre really doing is trying to motivate them or, better put, trying to help them find motivation for themselves. Luckily, as it turns out, six measurable factors drive each of us to action. (I discuss some of these in my presentation, Six Hidden Factors of Motivation.)Applying one or mora of these motivation theories to your recruitment strategies will help you move clients closer to yes.TruthSome of us just want the truth. Our search for the right answer whether its the right firm, the right candidate, or just the right place for lunch is tantamount. Right answers, of course, usually come from research. And research is just a fancy name for investigating what has already happened.Ask yourself how do you equip your clients with the truth? Does your website include real, well- described testimonials that prove youre the right solution to their staffing challenges? Do you converse about candidates in terms of their specific qualifications that illustrate why theyre a good fit? Improve these things and truth-seekers will appreciate and reward your efforts.ValueHave you ever met someone who only cares about Return on Investment, or ROI? Whether its about saving money or better time management, some of us are drive n to make wise investments. we want to see our limited resources pay off.Ask yourself Why would a clients time or money be better spent on your recruiting strategy than with other options? How does your firm or any candidate you recommend provide the most bang for the buck? Unless you differentiate your staffing services,in terms of value, you wont have much of an answer here. But if you can honestly say what Im recommending will pay for itself multiple times over, youre on the right track.ExperienceDo you know anyone who uses the phrase my feelings frequently? That person may be strongly motivated by personal experience. Some of us use our subjective reality, rather than a mora objective perspective, to make decisions. In other words, we follow our intuitions to good experiences.Ask yourself How will your recommendation influence the client? Can you explain to a new prospect the benefits you can offer them? Can you help a hiring manager understand whether a new hire will be a gru ppe player? If you can paint a positive picture of future experiences, those clients who are motivated this way will be more likely to work with you.ServiceSome of us really just want to help. If thats the case, then were happy to spend our own time and money supporting others in the pursuit of their goals. It may be about providing employee development, supporting a managers project initiative, or some other form of service. Either way, for some of us, another persons success is our reward.Ask yourself Who else is my recommendation good for? Will retaining your firms staffing services reduce the workload on your clients teammates? Will hiring your candidate give a manager a chance to develop their skills? If so, sharing these benefits with your client will help get them to yes.PowerThe phrase power-hungry is often used as an insult, but theres nothing wrong with wanting to be in dienstgrad of your own destiny. Strong leadership often mobilizes others around a goal, for example. Tho se of us who are motivated this way dont want to be left out of staffing decisions. Instead, we want to have a voice in what happens.Ask yourself Do your communications with your clients put your clients in the drivers seat, or make do they sound like youre the one at the helm? Its tempting to say we need to do this soon, for example, but your simple deadline reminder may sound like an unwelcome direction to the person who wants to lead. Remember to act (and speak) like your client is the one in charge. After all, they are.StructureSome of us run all of our decisions through the same set of criteria. For us, consistency is key, and things like standardized hiring criteria are tantamount. Using the same deciding factors for all of our decisions is crucial. When another person makes an off-the-cuff decision, or quickly changes direction, we become concerned.Ask yourself How do your recommendations support what is already important to the client? Are you advocating consistency in hirin g practices, and the careful building of an integrated team? Be careful not to give the impression that youre taking a shotgun approach, or you may find that your recruitment strategy grinds to a halt.Rules of EngagementLike any good tool, this set of six factors comes with a few instructionsFirst, you need to know that the same factor which resonates with one person might offend another. A manager focused on service might jump at the chance to hire someone in order to help his team, while a manager who is focused on value could find that suggestion ridiculous unless she could justify the cost of the hire. Use each approach sparingly until you determine which one works.Second and most important of all be honest. To emphasize is one thing, to fabricate is quite another. The staffing industry is a close-knit community and your reputation as a top tier hiring provider is far more important than any one sale.Having said that if youre careful to tailor your communications to your clie nts, and careful to stay completely honest theres a good chance that one of these six factors will get your client back in gear and back on the path to saying yes.Author BioEdward G. What sections should you include in your director of engineering resume?Any good director of engineering resume sample will include standard resume sections like skills, experience, and education. However, depending on your circumstances, you may want to add a few more. For example, if you have a lot of experience and you want to bring attention to a few relevant accomplishments, you could add a summary section. If you have technical qualifications, you may want to change your skills heading to something like core qualifications. One of the best ways to make the most of your job-hunting time is to use our step-by-step resume builder to create a personalized re sume.2. Whats the best way to list certifications on your director of engineering resume? If you have professional licenses and training in addition to your traditional education, you could add a certifications heading or include these details in your qualifications section, like the director of engineering resume sample does. If you decide to list training in its own section, keep it reverse chronological, like your experience section.3. How do you list education on a director of engineering resume? In a supervisory position such as director of engineering, education is an important part of your resume. Stick with tradition and add your education section to the end of your document, as the director of engineering resume sample shows. Include the type of degree you received and your major along with the name, city, and state of the university. If your degree is more than 15 years old, omit your graduation date. You can also skip mentioning your GPA, but do state if you graduated with honors.4. How do you list references on a director of engineering resume?Listing your references is no longer necessary, as you can see from the director of engineering resume sample. You also don’t need to state that your references are available upon request, because prospective employers assume this is the case and saying so only wastes precious space on your resume.Even though you shouldn’t list references on your resume, you should still keep this information in a separate document that you can give to the interviewer on request. Remember to ask permission before using someone as a reference, and notify your references when you are applying for jobs to minimize the surprise when your future employer contacts them.5. What should you do to make sure your director of engineering resume makes it past an ATS?Many companies now use automated applicant tracking systems (ATS) that look for keywords to help narrow down job candidates before a human ever looks through the submitted a pplication documents. To boost your chances of getting through these automated systems and getting your resume read by a real person, remember to use keywords from the job description in your resume. Sticking to a traditional format, like the one in the director of engineering resume sample, and uploading your document as a rich text file instead of a pdf may also help the ATS make sense of your information.

Will They Check Your Search History at Google Job Interview

Will They Check Your Search History at Google Job Interview Will They Check Your Search History at Google Job Interview How would you feel if someone could access your entire Google search history? Probably pretty upset, right? No wonder. Under the illusion of complete privacy, we research all kinds of embarrassing stuff. Just imagine if they checked your search history at Google job interview! After all, you don’t want anyone to know that you regularly google things like “pictures of beavers”. And out of all people, the last person you want to know tis your potential employer. For this reason, an immediate uproar ensued when several media outlets ran stories about Google wanting to allow employers access users’ search history.  These claims were obviously ill-founded but they still managed to go viral before anyone at Google could react to them. In the end, Google issued an official statement, according to which “only information that a candidate voluntary provides would be passed to a prospective employer.” All right, so Google doesn’t let other employers see your search history. But they surely do it themselves when hiring someone new, right? The short answer: No, they don’t.   Long answer: It’s complicated. After all, it comes down to whether you trust Google or not. And you shouldn’t be too quick to trust a corporation, right? We’re going to put Google under scrutiny by posing three essential questions: Does Google record your search history? Do they see your name attached to it? Do they use it when hiring people? 1. Does Google records your search history? As you probably already suspect, Google records all the searches you make; whether they’re flattering, mundane, or shameful. If you don’t want to simply take my word for it, you can even search through them yourself at https://myactivity.google.com/myactivity. You’ll be greeted by a screen that looks something like this: Welcome to Google MyActivity, the scariest page on the Internet! Using this tool, I was able to trace my search history all the way back to Summer 2009. Needless to say, this brief trip down the memory lane was quite an unsettling experience. I knew Google knows a lot about me, I just didn’t realise it was THAT much. So what do they know exactly? What you search for. They know when, where, and how often. Google also knows which links do you open and which results you open repeatedly. Your bookmarks. Only if you use Chrome as your default browser but everybody does, right? What videos you watch on YouTube. Since Google owns YouTube, it’s only natural they’d do this. Your location. If you use an Android phone or have Google Maps on your iPhone installed. What news interest you.  You dont even have to use Google News. Probably much more than that. What about the files you put on Google Drive? Or the conversations you have through GMail Chat or Hangouts? Let’s not forget that Google also knows about what kinds of ads you click on. If you use Google Calendar, they also know your schedule. It’s up for an argument whether Google uses all of this data. Still, they do possess it. Fortunately, Google gives you the option to stop them from tracking your online activity. Just go to “Activity controls” and deselect some or all of the options, as you see fit. Your activity controls should look like this. Pause it indefinitely! Moreover, you can also delete all the searches you made in the past. Just go to “Delete activity by” and select the time period which you want to delete. Be careful though. This will delete your search history permanently. If you want to keep your search history for future reference, you can download it by going to “Other Google activity” and clicking on “Download your past searches.” Aaaand, its gone. In conclusion- Yes, Google does quietly record all your activity. In the end, you can prevent them from doing  it. However, by default, this option is enabled for all users, which results in hundreds of millions people unknowingly feeding Google’s databases with deeply personal data. This means theres a good chance that Google already has all the data they need to check you search history at Google job interview. 2. Can they link your search history to your real-life identity? The problem is that after deleting your search history in the Google Dashboard, you still cannot be 100% sure it’s gone forever. You can only take Google’s word for it. That’s why many people on the Internet believe that Google retains this information even after you delete it. The company’s relative secrecy is partly to blame. Still, thats no valid enough reason to suspect Google of unethical practices. In any case,  let’s assume the paranoiacs are right- just for the sake of the argument. If there’s no way you can permanently delete your search history then, we need to ask another pressing question: Is it, or can it be attached to your personal identifier? At least in theory, Google should be able to make use of  your search records without anyone seeing your  personal details attached to it. According to Google’s Privacy Policy, they only use the collected information to improve their services and protect their users. Still, the relative vagueness of the document  might indicate these declarations are also somewhat open for interpretation, especially post-NSA scandal. In 2013, it was revealed that many of the largest internet companies, from Microsoft to Google, were involved in monitoring communications between the NSA and foreign nationals. At long last, the US government confirmed the existence of the scheme. According to the Washington Post, these companies participated knowingly, although the newspaper later retracted this statement. Google denied these claims altogether. Even if they have the technical means to check your search history before Google job interview, it doesn’t mean they actually do it. But let’s not take our musings too far. After all, we don’t want to encourage any conspiracy theories. We only discussed these things to see if it’s technically possible for a Google employee to access your search history while knowing it’s you who made those searches. In conclusion, the answer is probably yes. The company has the technical means to check your search history  at Google job interview.  But that alone doesnt mean they actually do it. 3. Do they actually check one’s search history at Google job interview? As you have surely noticed, our approach necessarily depends on some guesswork and anecdotal evidence. Since we chose not to trust Google entirely, there’s simply no way around it (#SAD!). In spite of its anecdotal nature, however, the following story is worth taking into account. While going through the Google application process himself, Bruce R. Miller began to research how Google handles porn searches. After all, you don’t want anyone who’s not searching for porn get porn and vice versa.  Miller came up with a pair of queries that straddled the line pretty well. “Pictures of beavers” gave him stock photos of beavers, whereas “pictures of cocks” resulted in nary a chicken. Sounds like a great way to spend your day. Google’s HR have access neither to your personal details nor your search history. But then, after several hours of exploring the issue, it finally dawned on him. What if one of the final things Google might do with his application was to check his search history? They would find a trail of the most disgusting queries you could imagine. So how did it end? He got the job, which was enough for him to conclude that they dont  look at your search history at Google job interview. Also, at the time of writing his post, Miller was already working for Google, which adds some relevance to his conclusion: “It’s encrypted and it would take a collusion of many people at Google to accomplish such a thing, and it would be known if such things happened. Image by The Hustle. Thanks! Still, you should know about one more thing in order to get the full picture. There’s one point during the interview process when Google  reportedly  checks your search history. In 2015, Max Rosett allegedly scored a job at Google under somewhat suspicious circumstances. While searching for “python lambda function list comprehension” something unusual happened. The search results split and folded back to reveal a box that said “You’re speaking our language. Up for a challenge?” Of course he was! After landing on a page that called itself “foo.bar”, he was given 48 hours to solve a programming challenge. Over the next two weeks, he had solved another five challenges. That’s when foo.bar gave him the option to submit his contact information. Wait, WHAT? I thought Google was supposed to already have all the information they need. Why would they ask for it again? The most likely  explanation is that Google’s HR have access neither to your personal details nor your search history. The foo.bar pop-up itself is  handled by an algorithm.  In the end, this is probably the best indirect proof that they don’t actually check your search history at Google job interview. Keep calm.  They wont check your search history at Google job interview. Perhaps the aphorism should be changed to “In Google, veritas.” We live in times when our digital footprints make our private lives publicly available, even if not for all to see. Although they don’t screen your search history  at Google job interview, it doesn’t mean nobody else can. For instance, a group of researchers at Stanford and Princeton developed a system that can connect your profile to your name and identity just by examining your browsing history. When you know what youre doing, you  don’t even need Google’s full cooperation for that. In any case, if this was the only thing stopping  you from applying for a job at Google, don’t hesitate any longer. And if you’re still unsure as for how to go about it, check out this article. Good luck! Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments!

Is Your Resume Hurting or Helping You Get That Interview

Is Your Resume Hurting or Helping You Get That Interview Is Your Resume Hurting or Helping You Get That Interview NEVER â€" I mean NEVER â€" use columns or tables. Most companies and many recruiters use databases to keep track of applicants.   When you apply online or via email to a potential employer, your resume gets “parsed” into a database.     If you use a table or columns in order to make things line up and to avoid a struggle with spaces and tabs, it will come out looking very strange on the screen.     Borders are inserted â€" lines show up that won’t go away â€" and spacing can look weird.   So while it might be quick â€" all of those easy-to-use resume templates in Microsoft Word decrease your chances of getting called for an interview because most of them use tables or columns. Do not be a jack of all trades! Make it abundantly clear to anyone who reads your resume what you do and what type of job you want to find â€" HAVE AN OBJECTIVE.   And I DON’T mean the very vague “I’d like to find a position where I can use my experience and education to help a company grow and prosper and to conquer war and make the world a better place to live for …..”   This is NOT a workable objective.   Say “I’m looking for a Business Development role… OR I want a Senior Project Management position…” It does not help your case if you have been in sales and marketing and project management and can do just about anything that an employer may ask of you.   I’ve never seen a job description that says “we want to hire a person with all kinds of different experience who we may or may not need in the future…”     FOCUS on what you want and state it clearly.   If you do have different skill sets, then make several different versions of your resume with specific objectives for each position. Use bullet points. The person who screens your resume â€" on average â€" does so in 10â€"15 SECONDS.   If you don’t grab their attention in that time, they will not read further.   Bullet point your: education relevant experience accomplishments skills Bullets make it much easier to quickly review and find the pertinent information needed in order to move you to the next step. Don’t force all your information on one page. If you have been in the work place for more than 10 years, you may very well have a two page resume.   That is fine.   What is not OK is to decrease the font â€" increase the margins and force everything into a single page. And speaking of fonts â€" DON’T mix them! It is very difficult on the eyes â€" and it is very distracting â€" to have your name in one font â€" the places you work in another and the description of what you did in yet another.     The same rule goes for bolding and italics.   Use them sparsely and occasionally.   Special effects are not special if used too frequently. Don’t capitalize your name. Again when your resume gets parsed into a database, any correspondence from the recruiter/HR person will pull the information from your resume.   So an email to you will say Dear JAMES, if you use caps.   Furthermore, many people in this age of email will interpret a word in all caps as yelling. Please don’t name your resume â€" resume.doc. Everyone who receives your resume will have their own preferences, but remember back to the old days of file cabinets.     Use your last name then first name and then any date or other identifying information you want.   Example â€" Johnson, Sandy resume 01-2011.doc OR Johnson, Sandy cover letter 01-2011.   You get the idea.   Keep your recipient in mind and remember they receive a LOT of resumes and if we filled them by first name we would have to look through many Sandy’s to find you. If you are sending your resume by email â€" put your BRIEF cover letter in the body of the email. If you can grab enough attention in your email to get that attachment opened, you want them to see your resume â€" not a cover.     OR better yet, forget the traditional cover letter and just make your email short and compelling. The U.S. cities with the strongest (and weakest) work ethic

The U.S. cities with the strongest (and weakest) work ethic The U.S. cities with the strongest (and weakest) work ethic Americans work hard as a rule â€" putting in 1,780 hours of work a year, according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. That’s 70 hours more than the average Japanese worker, 424 than the average German, and 266 than the average Briton. But what American cities have the strongest work ethic?  WalletHub compared the 116 largest cities across ten key metrics.WalletHub used “Direct work factors” and “Indirect work factors” to make their determination, which each worth a certain number of points.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Direct factors included: average workweek hours, unemployment rate, share of households where no adults work, share of workers leaving vacation time unused, share of engaged workers, idle youth (people aged 16-24 neither in school nor working).Indirect factors included: average commute time, share of workers with multipl e jobs, annual volunteer hours per resident, average leisure time spent per day.FindingsAll but one of the Top 10 cities are west of the Mississippi and all states had varying changes in unemployment rates since 2009.One thing’s for sure, though: these cities are working hard. Expert Jeffrey M. Stanton, Ph.D. and professor of Information Studies, Syracuse University, had a message for Wallethub for the country’s overachievers:“Certainly it is difficult for someone to routinely work a 10 hour day and maintain peak performance. This probably does vary by sector, however, and there are certain jobs or professions where long hours may mean more productivity. For many jobs, though, peak productivity has probably passed after just a few hours at work unless breaks and meals are structured in a way that helps people to recharge.”Top 10 cities Anchorage, AK      79.03 San Francisco, CA      75.37 Irving, TX      75.33 Virginia Beach, VA      74.95 Plano, TX      73.97 Denver, CO      73.70 Aurora, CO      72.87 Austin, TX      72.50 Cheyenne, WY      72.40 Sioux Falls, SD      71.96 Bottom 10 citiesThe bottom 10 cities (coming in at 107-116th place) clustered around the midwest, the east coast, and had two cities in Vermont â€" a state with a consistently sky-high unemployment rate since 2009.Professor Stanton hinted that changes in labor practices had contributed to the decline of some cities. “As a country, I think we are in a difficult time with respect to labor practices for a variety of reasons including the decline of unions,” said Professor Stanton. “Given the wealth disparities in many parts of the country and the great regional variation in unemployment, investment and support of business creation are crucial. The 11 tools you should use to create your personal brand

The 11 tools you should use to create your personal brand The 11 tools you should use to create your personal brand When you start venturing into a professional field, it immediately hits you there are 5 to 10 professionals that you follow closely. You probably trust their every word, you take their advice, test techniques they are suggesting and use the gadgets they recommend. The question is: How can you be that leading figure for others in your field? Welcome to the exciting, demanding and often a counter-intuitive world of personal branding!I have been building my personal reputation as a digital communications specialist for some 10 years now and I can tell you: It’s an uphill battle and you have to be in it for the long haul. But it surely is worth it and the opportunities you can unlock are tremendous. The good thing is that nowadays we have all kinds of tech solutions on our side, so building your personal brand can be much better organized. Here are some of my favorite tools.Tools for creating your personal brandNamechkShakespeare famously asks “What’s in a name?” I really don’ t know, but I know what’s in a Twitter handle. It makes no sense to be “johnnysmith” on one network and “smithj” on another, so make sure you keep a consistent naming convention for all your top channels. Test out your desired personal brand name with Namechk to see what social media it’s available on.GrammarlyYou got a great Twitter handle? Good, now write something there! That’s where Grammarly comes in. It’s a great tool to run your public communication through, in order to make sure you eliminate any pesky mistakes in your texts. It’s very handy, especially (but not only) if you’re not a native English speaker. Combine it with Hemingway to improve both your grammar and phrasing skills.CanvaBeing a person dealing with words means I’m not a natural when it comes to design. Canva helps me a lot with building the visual side of my brand. My top suggestion here is to focus on 2-3 templates you like, make them yours by adding your signature color, font or logo an d be consistent with visual messaging. The second best thing to having your own personal website is having an outstanding resume. This is not just a tool for job hunting it can be a great collateral material you can send to media you want to write for, events you want to speak at or presentations in front of potential clients.Related articles:Self-discovery through me datesNurture your character to enhance your personal brandWhy I decided to travel on my own for a monthTools for monitoring your personal brandGoogle AlertsGoogling yourself from time to time is a great habit you need to develop, but it’s not scalable enough. Set up Google Alerts for your name and any news you appear in will come straight to your inbox. Make sure you also include any common misspellings of your name or type it in different languages (a woe Cyrillic alphabet users across the world would be familiar with).MentionThis tool does the same thing Google Alerts does, but for social media mentions, as well. G etting everything in your email is very handy! The tool has a great free plan and if you’re still early in building your personal brand, it’ll be completely enough to track all mentions.TweetDeckIf you’re active on Twitter and let’s face it, that’s still the place where thought leaders gather you can keep everything in one place with TweetDeck. I rely heavily on Twitter lists to interact with different groups and I found it’s a great way to focus on specific topics and do more in less time.KloutMany digital practitioners have mixed feelings about Klout the methodology they use for calculating their score is discussed a lot. But it’s still a good way to assess performance over time. Don’t look at the absolute score that much just notice if you’re doing better or worse and act accordingly.Tools for extending your personal brandBufferLet’s face it you can’t be active on all channels all the time. Buffer allows you to schedule messages for different social med ia and post updates at your audience’s most active time of day. Just a tip there: don’t just post the title of the article and the link, add some value by sharing what you found interesting in the piece. That’s how you build true thought leadership.IFTTTThe tool’s name is the abbreviation of “if this then that” and this is pretty much how it works. You can make a variety of recipes to automate your online channels just choose a trigger event and the action that’s performed after, on the same network or not. The applications of IFTTT are pretty numerous you can start by checking out their top recipes for social media.MeetupA recent discovery of mine, Meetup lists interesting events in your area. It’s a great way to continue with brand building offline a less scalable, but very effective way of doing things. You will meet new people, find new niche communities. Hey, you can even muster the courage of speaking at one (and don’t forget to show your speaker profile !)Did I miss anything? Are you already working on your personal brand? Settling In for the Wrong Job

Settling In for the Wrong Job Settling In for the Wrong Job Settling In for the Wrong Job As a career coach I always advise my young graduated clients to project themselves into the future when applying for jobs and actually make a five-ten years agenda to walk towards the goal. Most of the time people tend to rush into the wrong job because it’s a matter of need, but think again; landing into the wrong job takes you away from your dream job every day. And where does your studying effort goes? Exactly! Sometimes the waiting feels eternal but it worth it. Now, no settling for the wrong job doesn’t mean that you will stay inactive. You have to stay active. For example, taking a volunteer job that they will pay you a symbolic salary is better than slaving yourself to the wrong employer while you are still applying for other jobs.   There are so many stories, but just to tell you one at the top of my mind: One of my friends had a crazy experience working in this company. She was desperate to find a job so she literally took the first one that was offered to her; later on when she found out the reasons on why nobody wanted to work there and why that vacancy was empty it was too late. For her surprise; the contract was a bit weird as well. She rushed to sign it back in the time and then she got stuck in that place for five years. The contract literally said that the Employee couldn’t quit in the first three years, and that all the training and other benefits she received had to be reimbursed in the equivalence amount when quitting the job. Also in the contract said that the Employer could modify the contract without notifying the Employee any time…in between other absurd things. My friend had to look for a lawyer in order to get out without so many problems, the case ended up in court and of course the judge granted her the freedom of walking away without further damage; but she spent so much money, time and effort to get out. Not to mention all the other opportunities that walked by while she was too busy fighting these nonsense. Having that story as a lesson you don’t want to experience yourself, then be careful where you end up and who do you work for. Here is a check-list of some of the questions you should ask in the different interviews: Why is the vacancy free? Who are you replacing and why Can a lawyer advise you when signing this contract? Can you suggest some change in the contract if there is something you don’t feel comfortable with? Can you think of your options or do you have to sign right away? Depending on the answers you can get an idea of the employer you will have. If they are in a rush to get someone is either because the last person had an accident that doesn’t allow the projects to go on or because they are in the rush to fill the position after firing the #1564 person in that job position for the same year. Being prudent never hurts. Also, remember when I said to make an agenda of five-ten years? Well… this means that you don’t have to wait for the dream job to come right away because that would be unrealistic and you have to stay optimist, instead you can work yourself up. Let’s say that you want to be a big journalist and want to work for the best Editorials in the world, so you can start by working in a little town local magazine-newspaper and build your skills, because having skills is a natural thing but applying them into the real world when having to deal with people is a different thing. Get adapted to the way things work. Maybe isn’t your dream to speak about the local championship of chess that just happened in the park; but then again you are in need to build a path for the future. Just keep acquiring skills and never stop learning, either a foreign language or a new certificate. Nowadays you can enhance your abilities faster than fifteen years ago. If you want to get straight to the point, hiring a professional is the solutions. Our right job is to help you out and we also learn every day from people’s mistakes that you don’t want to make. Remember that a good written professional resume can open the doors for you
